“We are an Island People and should be informed by the sea.”
Captain George Linzee
Using “Sound and Harbor as a Learning Laboratory,” LISEC has developed many interesting marine programs and educational alliances. It is possible to tailor a program to fit any age group. LISEC also enables scout troops to work for marine life, environment, local history and geology badges. LISEC has sponsored two Eagle Scout projects and can do more.
LISEC brings area school districts together in cooperative rather than competitive settings. At this moment the Mt Sinai and Comsewogue High Schools are working with the Town of Brookhaven on a hard shell clam raising project in Mt Sinai Harbor. Beach Clean-ups bring schools, scouts and community members together.
Harborfront Park has been designated as a site approved by Western Suffolk BOCES for school programs run by LISEC, which can be financially supported. A large group can be accommodated in rotation as multiple learning stations are available.
These locations include the Bayles Boat Shop for history, the rock front for geology, the beach front for marine discovery, and a creek walk for discussion of environmental issues such as water run-off. A touch-tank with marine animals can also be arranged.
Educational sails can be scheduled with LISEC aboard the Celtic Quest fishing boat that include trawling for sea life, plankton studies with a microscope, and fish tagging.
