LISEC - Environmental Education Initiatives

Celebrating National Estuaries Day

LISEC will be hosting its Third Annual Family Day at Harborfront Park on Saturday September 29, 2007 11 am to 5 pm. This is part of the National Celebration of Estuaries Day. Long Island Sound is a designated Estuary of National Significance.
Learn about raising oysters, protecting our waterways, waste and storm water management, even making paper you can plant. Beach and rock explorations take place.
A bee keeper will show you how he gathers honey. A geologist can take you to find a billion year old rock. You may catch a snapper off the pier or play with an Asian rock crab in a pool.
Presenters come from all over the island including the Riverhead Foundation (saving seals), the Nature Conservancy, the Gaia Institute, the Eastern Farm Workers Association and many more.
A special feature this year will be the Wilderness Traveling Museum with Tipi Ted "connecting people with the ecology of the land through his hands-on learning experience of Native American Culture." Help him raise his tipi at 10 am and hear about "Buffalo Days – the Life on the Plains." Buffalo hides, native games, drumming, face painting and take home crafts are all part of his presentation.
