LISEC - Board of Director Bios




  Kathy O'Sullivan (President) is a journalist with a long record of community service. As President, Kathy is working to develop educational programs for use at the park in coordination with environmentalists and baymen, area schools, local and state governments, and partner organizations.

Cathy Van Ostrand (Vice-President) has taught in the Sachem School District for 29 years. During her many years of service to LISEC she has run the Tall Ships Sailing Program. She also co-founded Friends of the Harbor, which won the Port Jefferson Record Environmental Organization of the Year Award in 1999. She continues to develop the educational programs that LISEC offers on the Seawolf and at Harborfront Park.

Charles Kenny (Treasurer) is an avid coastal sailor and retired attorney who had his practice in Port Jefferson for 28 years. His service to the community includes being both past President and Director of the Chamber of Commerce, past President and member of the Port Jefferson Rotary Club and current member of the Port Jefferson Zoning Board of Appeals. He has served three terms as President of LISEC overseeing the birth of the Chandlery Non-Profits Organization and establishing office space for LISEC in the Chandlery. He is a valued member of the small boat building crew and is charged with increasing corporate sponsorships.

Betty Ann Arink is an avid boater, having grown up on the Great South Bay and has been boating there for 66 years. She is a retired university professor, marina manager, and director of the Long Island Maritime Museum. Betty Ann is an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, having been a flotilla commander and currently serving as public education officer, and vessel examiner. She brings a variety of skills to LISEC, especially in the Bayles Boat Shop, and serves as our liaison with other maritime organizations.

Charles Carter worked 12 years as a shop teacher in the Sachem School district and for many more as administrator for vocational programs with Nassau BOCES. He has recently built his own timber frame barn.

Stephen Cluett is Captain of Stony Brook University's research vessel Sea Wolf. He is LISEC's liaison with the university's Marine Science Research Center.

David Johnson resides in Port Jefferson Station and is a food broker at G A Davis. He has an Associates degree in Marine Science and has studied Marine Zoology, Botany and Oceanography in pursuit of his BS degree. He is a graduate of the Cornell Cooperative Extension SPAT Program (Southold Project in Aquaculture Training). He is a USCG licensed captain and avid scuba diver with has five certifications and over 600 dives. He has been Beach Captain for the past sixteen years under the International Coastal Cleanup Program sponsored by the American Littoral Society and is director of the Port Jefferson Harbor Shellfish Restoration Project. Through LISEC, Johnson has received a grant from Long Island Sound Study / New York Sea Grant to support the program which will create a sanctuary within the harbor complex to protect the shellfish until they are well established. Dave is also the founder of the Costal Steward Program.

Bill Ramsden is a carpenter, cabinet maker, and shipwright, who built a 42' Malibar Schooner in his backyard. Bill is co-director of LISEC's Small Boat Building and Restoration Program and a long-standing member of the Traditional Small Craft Association.

Barbara Ransome is a trustee of the Village of Port Jefferson and is LISEC's liaison with both Village government and the Business Improvement District (BID).

Phil Schiavone recently retired from 35 years in the construction industry. He was president and CEO of E. W. Howell Co., Inc., the oldest and one of the largest construction firms in the New York metropolitan area. He is a member and past Chairman of the Port Jefferson Planning Board. Phil is an avid photographer and experienced small boat builder. He has over thirty year¹s boating experience as an owner of both power and sailing craft. He is co-director of LISEC¹s Small Boat Building and Restoration Program.

Charles "Chic" VoorhisVoorhis is a local resident who grew up sailing on Port Jefferson Harbor; he remains an avid sailor and licensed captain, and shares a love of harbor history and it's environment with other LISEC members. Chic and his wife Michelle raised two sons who are both graduates of Port Jefferson Schools and are in process of completing college.  You may see Chic playing guitar and singing blues, bluegrass and rock n' roll in local clubs or at LISEC events. Chic has a Bachelor's degree in Geology and a Master's in Environmental Engineering, and has been practicing in the planning and environmental fields in government and the private sector on Long Island for 26 years. He is a certified planner and environmental professional and manages a land use, planning and environmental consulting business in Melville. Chic is an original director of LISEC and assisted with the formation of the organization in 1994, completing 4 years of dedicated service as a Board member and secretary.  We welcome Chic as Director Emeritus.
