LISEC’s SS SLOOP RESTORATION PROJECT

A number of years ago, Chic Voohris, a LISEC founding member and director emeritus, gave LISEC a SS sloop.  The boat remained out on a rack in the boat house yard until January 2011, when LISEC Director Phil Schiavone offered to fund the restoration.

The boat was moved into the boat shop and the assessment of what was needed to restore her for sailing was done.  All ribs, deck frames, transom and stem needed to be replaced.

The deck was taken off carefully with hope that much of it could be salvaged, however the frames, transom and stem had to be removed.  The shape of the jull was stabilized and through the next several months, oak was steamed into new ribs and placed in their respective stations.  A transom, stem and skeg were made.  Deck frames were put into place.

Watch for further development of the restoration.
At the present time, the hull has been turned over and planks refastened, splines put into seams and caulking in areas where needed.  She will be faired so fiberglass cloth can be applied to the entire hull.  Once that is complete she will be turned back over and the deck installation will begin.
